TRAINING SCHOOL: Fluids and Solid Interfaces, 12–15 April 2011, Sofia, Bulgaria |
|
After the success of the previous schools in Golm (2008), Dresden (2009) and Delft (2010) the upcoming 2011 school will be organized by the Department of Chemical Engineering of Sofia University (SU). The school was held on 12-15 April 2011 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The main characteristic of the school is the strong emphasis on learning. Experts in the field introduce the basic material in tutorials that are followed by workshops where exercises related to the presented material are worked on. Other tutorials specifically deal with analysis methods that are followed by case studies where selected experimental data sets are analyzed by groups of students. Additional lectures are given to show the "state of the art" of the presented methods.
For this year's school the emphasis is on systems and phenomena that include solid/liquid interfaces: free vs. wetting films; microfluidity; superhydrophobicity; particle-stabilized emulsions and foams; characterization by means of scattering techniques and impedance spectroscopy. On the fundamental side, emphasis will be on surface forces and on wetting phenomena.
The program of the school comprises the following sessions:
- Fluids and Solid Interfaces, Ger Koper, TU-Delft.
- Surface Forces and Liquid Films, Peter Kralchevsky and Krassimir Danov, University of Sofia.
- Micro-Scale Flows, Charles Baroud, Ecole Polytechnique.
- Wetting and Superhydrophobicity, Avi Marmur, Technion, Haifa.
- Particles as Surfactants and Antifoams, Nikolai Denkov and Slavka Tcholakova, University of Sofia.
- Scattering from liquid-liquid interfaces, Ali Zarbakhsh, University College London.
- Small Angle Neutron Scattering at Interfaces and in Bulk Systems under Shear, Henrich Frielinghaus, Jülich.
- Impedance Spectroscopy on Polymer Coated Interfaces, A. Sezai Saraç, Istanbul Technical University
